Red October
Meditative investigations with
watercolor and a limited palette

October 13, 2018 • 9:00 am – 5:00 pm
with a break for lunch • Limited to 12

“Each color lives by its mysterious life.”  – Wassily Kandinsky

Is there a cold war going on with your creativity? Has your artistic practice gone covert? We are going to thaw tensions and heat things up with the color RED, the second in our 3-part series exploring primary colors.
Join me for a fun and engaging exploration utilizing watercolor and a palette of variations of red at City Art and paint among the galleries. Working in a contemplative atmosphere we will explore the primary with the broadest spectrum of expression. Students will create a map of color, learn ways to create a friendlier relationship with their art-making, and make a custom dossier (folder) to hold their explorations.
This will be a wonderful opportunity to step out of the daily grind without phones (we will bravely check them at the door) and bridge mindfulness with the artistic process. This workshop is ideal for beginners or experienced artists who struggle with returning to a beginner’s mind.
Kathryn Van Aernum is a visual arts graduate of Naropa University – the birthplace of the modern mindfulness movement and the first educational institution in the country to bridge contemplative practice and academic rigor. While primarily known as a photographer, and photo blogger, Kathryn is also an accomplished watercolorist, mixed media and book artist, and creativity coach.
Her work has appeared in juried competitions, group and solo exhibits in Key West, FL; Boulder, CO; Fort Collins, CO; Ann Arbor, MI; and Columbia, Spartanburg and Lake City, SC. and is in many private collections throughout the US.

Fee $155 – includes watercolor paper and others. Click here for additional supply list. If you have questions you can PM on Facebook @kvanastudios, or email me at Kathryn@kathrynvanaernum.com

Summer Blues
Meditations with Watercolor and
limited palette

June 23, 2018 • 9:00 am – 5:00 pm

“If you see a tree as blue, then make it blue.” – Paul Gauguin

When Georgia O’Keeffe moved to Texas to teach, she limited herself to working with only charcoal for 9 months and then “allowed” herself blue as she developed the vision that we now equate with quintessential O’Keeffe. Through limitation we often find expansion; this is true both personally and artistically.
When you think of blue what comes to mind: The Aegean Sea? Elvis? Bluebonnets? Join me for a meditation with watercolor and a palette working only with variations of blue at City Art and paint among the galleries. Working in a contemplative atmosphere we will explore the coolest of the primaries and create a simple book structure containing our investigations. This is the first of a 3-part series exploring primary colors.
This will be a wonderful opportunity to step outside of time without phones (we will bravely check them at the door) and our daily grind, bridging mindfulness with the artistic process. This workshop is ideal for beginners or experienced artists who struggle with returning to a beginner’s mind.
